Encaustics – mixed media with hot wax

Encaustic painting is also known as hot wax painting. The technique involves using heated beeswax and dammar resin to which coloured pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied with brushes to a surface. Sometimes I use prepared wood, though often I also use stretched canvas.
I call my paintings created with this technique “encaustic collages”. I embed a variety of different materials such as paper, sand, plants or fabric. I also combine encaustics with oil paintings.
